Yahoo! announced yesterday that it had a rise in income in their first quarter which shocked most people. Their income in the US was actually 9% higher in the United States this first quarter vs. the first quarter of 2007.
Many are speculating will this actually help Yahoo! in their quest to be an independent company or just increase a bid for potential buyers and make it hard to turn down.
I imagine we will see an outcome to this Yahoo! being sold saga by the end of the second quarter (June 30, 2008) either way.
With mid 2008 approaching, many are awaiting the opening of the twice delayed Large Hadron Collider. The LHC has been in development since 1995 and the total cost of the project will equal $5 to $10 billion dollars after numerous cost over-runs. It is being built in a tunnel under France and Switzerland and upon completion will be the world’s largest and highest-energy particle accelerator. It is expected to produce Higgs boson which would confirm the standard model of physics. This confirmation would help in the search for a grand unified theory. The funding of LHC has been a collaboration with contributions coming from over two thousand physicists and hundreds of universities and laboratories.
Researchers have designed a two wheeled robot named u-BOT-5, designed specifically for taking care of the elderly. This innovation comes just in time as baby boomers start reaching the retirement age. u-BOT-5 is capable of picking up small objects, reminding people to take their medication, picking up packages, cleaning, shopping, administering virtual house calls, using a stethoscope and even dialing 911. The robot was built by Rod Grupen at the University of Massachusetts Amherst along with a team of UMass computer scientists and graduate students. The cost to make u-BOT-5 was $65,000 but manufacturers say it can be recreated with as little as a couple thousand dollars. This is an obvious deal when compared to the $1,500 a week it can take to employ a caregiver.
Iron Man is to arrive in theatres in the coming weeks and the movie is sure to raise some questions about a real life Iron man suit. In the movie, a man creates a suit of armor that gives him extraordinary strength. The movie seems to come to life with the Sarcos XOS exoskeleton, a suit which allows the wearer to endlessly pull weight. Every two hundred pounds feels like ten pounds to the person inside. This is possible because the machine follows the movements of the user, samples the user’s behavior thousands of times per secone and amplifies the user’s strength with the help of a built in computer. The HAL exoskeleton from Japan is an equally impressive device which detects muscle movements through electrical signal flows on the skin surface. Sensors pick up these currents and translate them into signals of its own which control electric motors at the hips and knees.
Surgeons have successfully implanted “bionic eyes” in two blind patients at Moorfields Eye Hospital in Britain. The devices are the first of its kind and are already showing promising results in improving visualization for those affected because of common conditions like age-related macular degeneration or retinitis pigmentosa. The “eyes” integrate a video camera and transmitter on a pair of glasses which transmits moving images along the optic nerve to the brain via an artificial retina. This will allow the patient to discern basic images of motion, lightness and darkness. The implants are a part of the international clinical trial of the technology named the Argus II retinal implant. The Argus II test has already been successful in a few Americans like Linda Moorfoot who says her new, limited vision is “wonderful.” While surgeons are currently implanting just 16 electrodes, they soon plan to raise that number to 1,000 which would make face recognition possible. Although some warn that this technology is still in its “very early days,” many hope that the implant will be available to NHS patients within three to five years.
